Tsai Ing-wen

Tsai Ing-wen (born on 31 August 1956 in Taipei, Taiwan) is a Taiwanese politician (Democratic Progressive Party, DPP). She served as the President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) from 2016 to 2020 and was re-elected for a second term from 2020 to 2024.

Tsai received her law degree from National Taiwan University in 1978, followed by a Master of Laws at Cornell Law School in 1980. She completed her Ph.D. in Law at the London School of Economics in 1984.

Tsai began her political career as Chief Legal Advisor for Taiwan's accession to the World Trade Organization in the 1990s. She was appointed Minister of the Mainland Affairs Council in 2000. In 2004, she officially joined the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). She served as a Legislator-at-large from 2005 to 2006 and was appointed Vice President of the Executive Yuan in 2006. Tsai was elected as DPP Chairperson for multiple terms (2008–2012, 2014–2018, 2020–2022). She was the DPP New Taipei City Mayoral candidate in 2010 and the party’s Presidential candidate in 2012.

Tsai was elected President of Taiwan in 2016, serving her first term until 2020, and was re-elected for a second term from 2020 to 2024.
