Kai Wegner
Kai Wegner, born in Berlin’s Spandau district in 1972, began his political career in 1995 as an elected member of the Spandau Borough Assembly. He then served in Berlin’s parliament, the House of Representatives, from 1999 to 2005, when he won a seat in the German Bundestag. His roles there included serving as the construction policy spokesperson for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group. In 2021, Wegner was the lead candidate for the Berlin CDU in Berlin’s parliamentary election and was subsequently chosen to be the chair of the CDU parliamentary group in the House of Representatives. In Berlin’s repeat election on 12 February 2023, the CDU emerged as the strongest party and Wegner was again elected to chair the CDU parliamentary group. Following the election, the CDU formed a governing coalition with the SPD. Kai Wegner has been the Governing Mayor of Berlin since 27 April 2023.
